Der Drache

heirtothearcaneViatorus was eight years old by the time he was introduced to Vercor Augustus Durant. The man was tall, pale and deep set lines warned of his serious nature before he even said a word. Half the family referred to him as ‘der Drache’ and the title was not unsuited to him. The power surrounding him was palpable, his presence enough to demand respect. The first time that he met his father, the man stared him down until he offered a hand. It trembled slightly. A moment stretched on and the large, firm grip that broke it, steadying his hand, didn’t calm his nerves.
“Do you know who I am?” Vercor asked with a low voice, one that had a husky hiss to the edge of it.
Viatorus nodded, Vercor frowned. “You’re my father. Th-The scholar of magic itself.”
Silence stepped into the space where Viatorus had expected the conversation to start. He stood and fidgeted, each finger twitch followed by another crease in his father’s brow. Just as Viatorus was about to speak again, Vercor took a deep, slow breath and folded his arms. “I will be your teacher for a time."
Again, Viatorus nodded. "I know. You're going to teach me your area of study."
"For all the good it will do a dreamwalker." The comment betrayed bitterness, though Viatorus had no idea what he'd done to earn it.
The boy's nerves and confusion stunned him momentarily. "Uncle Stathis said I'm a natural dreamwalker, the best he's seen."
"That is not enough. You will have to be the best in history." Even if he were the type to argue, Viatorus didn't have a chance before his father turned back into the thin crowd of relatives. As he passed Stathis, Viatorus heard him reprimand his brother, voice almost a snarl. "Stop coddling the boy. You'll ruin him completely."
